I really like racing bu i dont know what type of racing i want to do. i want excitement and fun (not Nascar) and i am just sure where to start. i have heard about the karting and dirt track, but i want to be accualy racing in a car and kinda fast too. i really just dont know what my options are and i really would like this to me my new hobbie, i know i will love it. i live in houston,tx and i just dont know what all is here either, i have noticed most of the racing goes on near the east coast and west coast. any ideas or anything would be great thanks. =)i have taken a look at SCCA and another racing association, but i cant decide on what i want to do. and the reason i say i dont wanna start with karts is because i know i can win at that, i want something challenging that going to take time, work and practice to be good at. FYI - when i messing around with friends on the road kinda racing i love every minute of it, i just go into this zone.

Check out the SCCA website (www.scca.com) - they'll get you started, including licencing, hints, etc.  Otherwise, join a car club - many of them also have race days, so that's a good way to get your feet wet as well.  Just make sure you don't start racing your daily driver - if you break it, you're stuck until you can get it fixed.Good luck!

" i have heard about the karting and dirt track, but i want to be accualy racing in a car and kinda fast too."Racing is very hard work. You have to be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. There is no short cut.

I think Beth has hit the nail on the head. Racing with your friends and racing against other competitive drivers are two different things. There are certain licensing and qualifying tests that you will need to take prior to racing at most levels. Also racing is not cheap and this is probably what holds back most people. Id advise starting at a lower level with few special qualifications for the car, and gaining some experience as well as a bit of "fame". That way when you need a high performance car you will be able to get some local sponsors to help offset the costs.

racing is more than what u think, u dont just get in a car slam the gas pedal down, and go fast, it takes skill, and lots of experience. It also takes money, and lots of times, have to be cool under extreme amount of pressure, and it  requires u start at the bottom and work your way up. I have raced both pavement, and dirt tracks.

I would start in karting. You can go to one of your local karting centers and get a feel of racing. Then you can step up to shifter kart's. They may be little but they are very fast!!! It is a way to understand lines, braking and negotating traffic. This is how alot of pro drivers start off. Here are some karting places in Houston.http://www.yelp.com/biz/tTGstOaj1XqHay1i6kDGEwhttp://www.yelp.com/biz/iUgjjnGvyW4TUaWLE7uwmQI dont know if these places are the amusment park karts. Those are the one you want to avoind.
