PAKISTAN AT 11/5 CAN BOWL ENGLAND OVER
It seems the memory of the Ashes victory is fading fast for bettors
judging by the weight of money for Pakistan to win the forthcoming
Test series against England. England are 6/4 (from 5/4), with the home
side available at 8/5 from an opening 2/1, and the draw at 9/4. Should
Michael Vaughan miss the first game, then the price on Pakistan will
shorten even more ahead of the 1st Test on Saturday (live In-Play
betting available), for which they’re 11/5.
That looks a price with taking, considering that in the 21 matches
played between the two sides in Pakistan, England have only won twice
(Pakistan have lost only 21 out of 138 matches at home). Should they
win the first match, the next two games are going to be played on
nailed draw pitches. Besides, the pitch for the opening Test (and
subsequent Tests) will be prepared to their advantage, probably a
spinning wicket, which will suit Danish Kaneira down to the ground.
When it comes to spin bowling, he has no peers (132 wickets in 28
matches), and he’s a great bet at 10/11 to be Top Pakistan Bowler.
There’s still money to be made by backing England in the other
speciality markets, particularly Marcus Trescothick at 5/2 to be Top
Runscorer. With doubt’s over Vaughan’s participation, and the fact
that Strauss could be absent for the final Test to be with his
expectant wife, that could be the bet of the series. Of course, Freddy
will have his backers at 6/1, but his aggressive style will not
necessarily be rewarded here. In the top bowler market, Ashley Giles
looks best at 5/2 as England will be relying heavily on his spin, and
he could end up bowling more overs than Flintoff and Harmison.
