No sooner has the curtain come down on the 2005 season then we jump straight
into the opening event of the ‘2006’ season, with the inaugural HSBC
Champions Tournament being played in China. The $5 million purse (plus
appearance money!) has attracted a star studded field, headed by the leading
money winners from both the European and US Tours – Tiger Woods and Colin
Montgomerie - and it’s the latter that looks great value at 20/1 this week.
Monty, of course, has just taken his eighth Order of Merit title, and
couldn’t be in better form after victory in the Dunhill Links Championship
and four other top tens in his last six starts. He’s also got a great record
in China (form figures of 31-6-6-1 in the country), and is not the sort of
player who just turns up for appearance money. He was my outright pick for
the Volvo Masters, where he should have won after building up what appeared
to be an unassailable lead in the third round, but he’s fancied to make
amends this week. The 20/1 (22/1 Enhanced Win Only) could look big come
Sunday, but even then you’re assured of getting on via our live ‘In-Play
Console.’
