Another high-class chase takes place this weekend at Newbury, the Hennessy
Cognac Gold Cup. The usual suspects will have us all checking our
Ten-to-Follow entries, Trabolgan, Comply or Die and Our Vic to name but
three. The former is a top class performer, winner of the Royal and Sun
Alliance Chase at Cheltenham, but the criteria for winning the Hennessy is
usually a light-weight, preferably under 11 stone, and Nicky Henderson’s
runner may end up topping the weights. All the money this week has been for
the Martin Pipe-trained runner Comply Or Die, who is now trading at 6/1
second favourite (behind 7/2 Trabolgan) and given Pipe’s record in this race
and recent good form, this one is hard to ignore.
The pick of the bunch, for me, is Mark Bradstock’s gelding King Harald. This
horse is very well handicapped, and wasn’t disgraced when finishing fourth
behind Innox two weeks ago at Cheltenham. He lost his chance when stopping,
almost to a walk, at the last, but ran on gamely up the gruelling Cheltenham
hill. This trip is a furlong shorter, and coupled with a favourable weight
is the value bet of the race at 8/1.
Each-way punters could do worse than St. Matthew, which is currently a 20/1
shot. This horse is extremely well handicapped and won very well last
weekend over hurdles at Haydock when unfancied. David Elsworth’s runner is
in great form, which counts for a lot in a race like this and has combined
hurdling and chasing successfully so far this season. In truth, there are a
lot of classier animals in the contest, but a small each-way punt at a big
